You might have just tries cocaine once, but the class A drug can stay in your system for days, weeks and even months on end.
According to a recent report, one in 10 people aged between 16 and 59 have tried the white stuff at some point in their lives – making it the second most popular illegal substance in the UK after cannabis.
And worryingly London was recently named the “cocaine capital” of Europe for the second year running. In fact it was one of the only cities in the world to see a rise in usage of the illegal substance.
Here are the facts about what casual cocaine use can actually do to you immediately after you've taken it and for years after:
Short term
Snorting cocaine will make your pupils dilate, increase your heart rate, raise your body temperature and suppress your appetite.
Drug users tend to feel more energetic, confident and a euphoric high as they “come up” because coke interferes with the pleasure and reward signals sent by the brain.
But the white stuff can also make you feel aggressive, sick or give you a headache.
Dabbling with blow messes up your sleep pattern and leaves you feeling wide awake.
The short-term effects last for between 20 and 30 minutes and users have a strong temptation to take more to stave off the “come down” which makes you feel flat and depressed.
This crash period can last for days after the drug binge and can leave people feeling like they have the flu.
Since coke is usually cut with a variety of other substances, including laxatives and benzocaine, it’s also possible to experience varied side-effects from these.
Long term
Prolonged cocaine use can do permanent damage to the liver, kidney, lungs and blood vessels of the heart and brain.
As the stimulant increases your blood pressure it can cause heart attacks, strokes and even death.
Because the drug suppresses your appetite, regular use can lead to weight loss and malnutrition. Snorting the powder can also seriously damage your nose over time.
